Take the quiz

How are your choices relating to transport, energy use and waste disposal affecting the climate?
> Take the general or business quiz!

'Play it Cool' is a fun activity which will help you find out more about reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the effects of climate change.

Tips & hints
Reduce paper waste by printing documents double-sided, using email instead of faxes/mail and re-using blank sides of paper for scrap or fax paper. Less paper usage means less trees have to be cut down to make paper - and trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Your stories

There has been a high level of interest in this website and hundreds of people have made comments on the public awareness campaign itself as well as climate change more generally. The following comments are just a few examples of what New Zealanders have said:

  • "We all need to do our bit to make sure this beautiful planet stays the same for future generations - just the small things like recycling, turning lights off, recycling water on gardens etc."
  • "I try to plant as many plants as possible and compost instead of putting food scraps in the bin. Also, as much as possible, I walk or bike instead of using my car."
  • "I think this is a very good idea. Even though I am only 13, I am still worried about how our earth and home is being destroyed. It upsets me about how many people in our world don't actually know or give a damn that at this rate the whole world could be surrounded by thick smog. In our life times. Also what annoys me is the public in general often say yes we'll recycle etc but they don't. [They use] excuses like I'm too busy or what's the point one person can't make a difference - the point is they can because one person means everyone."
  • "New Zealand has such a beautiful environment that I really love getting involved in it. I want my grandkids and their grandkids to be able to enjoy New Zealand the way I do and anything I can do to ensure that, I will!"
  • "We walk, cycle and take the bus a fair amount. We try to combine errands when we do take the car. Our home is well-insulated, double glazed and we have a heat exchange unit. In my work, I aim to be energy efficient and support the use of renewable energy."
  • "I am international student. Let's do what we can to keep New Zealand as pure as it always should be."
  • "I make a contribution by biking to Uni everyday and turning lights and heaters off when not in a room. The more people jumping onboard the better!"
  • "Great initiative and not before time. I'd like to ensure that my daughter and subsequent generations actually can breathe air, engage with nature and enjoy an unspoilt planet."
  • "Would love to contribute in any way possible. I love this country...and would love it to stay this way!"
  • "We have a family of six and we all go out together to run errands in one big run instead of making several smaller trips. We also have a bottom drawer full of plastic bags that we have collected from shopping - we reuse these for packing groceries and carrying books to school etc. And we recycle glass, cans and paper."
  • "Domestic use of wind and solar power should be encouraged."
