In your community
There are lots of ways your community can get involved in
helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the effects
of climate change.
Community-level initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
are likely to focus on transport, waste and energy use. They
may involve a wide range of activities including:
- forming cycle groups and helping to develop cycle pathways
- carpooling projects
- encouraging use of public transportation (e.g. via employment
contracts)
- energy efficiency and conservation projects for households,
community premises and businesses
- community composting projects
- waste minimisation projects which help save electricity
- renewable energy projects
- community awareness programmes to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions
- a range of other climate-friendly projects that are community-based.
Contact your council to find out what's happening in your
region and how you can get involved.
Your council may have already joined
the Communities for Climate Protection New Zealand (CCP-NZ)
programme which provides a strategic framework via which
councils and their communities can take action to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions. As a global programme, councils
participating in CCP-NZ benefit from international best
practice and experience.
The CCP programme has proven successful in a number
of other countries in reducing greenhouse gas emissions
by:
- increasing sustainable transportation
- improving energy efficiency and conservation
- enhancing urban design
- reducing landfill emissions
